Semi-Final Rounds (6:00 pm-7:30
pm)
-
Each team will compete in an initial
semi-final round consisting of up to six
teams. The winning team of each semi-final
round will move on to the Championship Round.
-
Each team may request two additional
pronunciations of its word and/or a repetition
of the word’s definition.
-
Each team shall designate a captain who
will serve as their designated speller.
-
Team members may collaborate using paper
and pencils provided to them.
-
The team must begin spelling within 20
seconds after the pronunciation of the word.
A designated timekeeper will track the time.
-
Once the team’s designated speller
starts to spell a word, that speller may
stop and begin again one time, repeating
the spelling from the beginning. There can
be no alteration of the letters or change
from the original letter order given. Any
changes will be treated as a misspelled
word.
-
As soon as a team misspells two words,
it is eliminated from the contest.
-
Each team will be given two words from
an “Intermediate” words list
to spell. All remaining words in each round
will come from an “Advanced”
words list.
-
If each of the teams in the semi-final
round misspell their first two words, the
Round is continued until all but one team
is eliminated. That team is the winner of
the round and will participate in the Championship
Round.
There will be a 15 Minute Intermission Before
the Championship Round.
Championship Round (7:45 pm-8:30
pm)
- The teams that won their Semi-Final Round
will compete in the Championship Round.
- Only words from the Advanced Words List
will be used.
- The rules are the same as those for the
Semi-Final Round until there are only two
teams left.
- When a team misspells a word, the next
team must spell the same word.
- If both teams misspell the same word,
the contest resumes as described above.
The Championship Team receives a winners’
trophy to be displayed at their place of business
for one year when they will be invited to
return to defend their title. |
