Building upon the success of our Career Academy trainings and job placements in health, hospitality, and customer service, Dorcas Place will be preparing adult learners for employment in the emerging green sector and long-term industry.
The Rhode Island Welcome Back Center (RIWBC) opened in June 2008, just 10 months ago, and is currently serving more than 120 internationally trained health professionals residing in our community: 43 physicians; 39 nurses; 5 physical therapists; 5 social workers; and 29 allied health professionals. The Center is a public/private partnership project that is building bridges between a pool of underemployed healthcare professionals living in our community and the need for a more linguistically and culturally diverse health care workforce.
This new college preparatory program is helping to make adult learners college-ready by offering intensive reading, writing, and math classes in the evenings at Dorcas Place for 6-8 hours each week. Courses are taught by CCRI faculty. In its first year, 84% of students completed the program. It is making a great contribution towards helping low-income, non-traditional students gain the academic background and skills necessary to succeed in college.
In September 2008, the USDOE awarded a Full Service Community Schools Program grant to Dorcas Place. This is a 5-year Family Literacy partnership with Providence Public Schools, John Hope Settlement House, Making Connections Providence & Greater Providence YMCA.
